Moments + differences at kokgai café

I have settled down again in Udonthani, my hometown, after 45 years of being away, after graduating from art school and living in Bangkok for several years I moved to Sisaket and then to Ubonratchathani. I have done so many things to make a living and for surviving. For a long period I couldn’t focus on my practice as a visual artist.. that was a suffering for me but I kept telling myself that what I do in everyday life is an art work. Everything I had to deal with needed a sense of aesthetics or, I could say that art is always in my breath. Then, again, here in Udonthani on my father’s land, I have settled down and opened Kokgai Café Arts & Crafts to make a living. It has become my art project. At the beginning I persuaded seven women to work with me, some stayed only one month, some stayed a few months, all of them are involved in this project and all of them did something on this land and for Kokgai Café Arts & Crafts. I found out many interesting points of views from them because we all come from different backgrounds, and we all learn a lot from living & working together here. Our Gathering is based on our activities, and our different and shared realities.
Our Gathering becomes part of the history in this space. All activities are documented in photos and video. In the meantime, from our time together, each one of us offers an object that represents our individuality and vision. This is all gathered in a handmade book to tell our stories. – Nitaya
